And if you thought you will get to read the names of 627 in the list...YOU ARE NOT OFF THE MARK!!!!
After much patriotic and jingoistic promises to bring back the nation's wealth held in foreign banks; the Modi Government today handed over the list of 627 names given by HSBC Bank to the supreme court.
For the discerning reader, the following link gives a more real idea about the concept of black money in India. And how Switzerland is not the Mecca for all money.
But for now, let us concentrate on matters at hand. The original list of Indian account holders was actually running into many millions. Yes, millions!!! When the first request from the Indian Government was received, the Swiss authorities were at sea.
What list was being solicited? Without Indian accounts, most of these banks would be bankrupt. Anyway, they generated this huge list and packed them in consignments and sent it to India via sea cargo. The matter was soon forgotten as the epitome of Swiss Banking, Union Bank of Switzerland, UBS, Zureiche did not consider this request to be anything but routine.
When things have to go wrong: they do go wrong. This sea cargo met its tryst with destiny when the ship was captured by the Somalian pirates. This was pure hell!!! The pirates were in hold of a gold mine. The illiterate pirates were expecting a useful material-laden cargo ship but were mighty disappointed to see boxes full of computer printed dot matrix pages. What could be done with this ???
In the meanwhile, the Swiss Government, in its deepest hour of crisis; initiated communications with the Somalian pirates. Alas, it was too late. The Somalian pirates, in a fit of frustrated ire; had dumped all these reams of paper into the ocean. By this time, the Somalian Government had initiated communications with the pirates to let go this sea cargo ship untouched. The pirates panicked. They just packed up all containers and dumped them into the ocean. There was one envelop lying with the consignment. They handed this over to the captain of the ship and got off. The ship made its way to India and the ship's captain; deeply disturbed by the pirates' experience, did not confide to anything else being the cargo than this one singular letter.
This is the list that has now made it's way to the Supreme Court.
This was the list of all applicants whose requests for account opening were rejected for non conformation to minimum balance for account maintenance and other such grounds.
...To be continued!!!
