Just two days after DMK walked out of the UPA alliance over Government's indecision on the Lanka issue, as a matter of coincidence CBI decides to raid the residence of DMK leader Stalin. This happened on the 21st of March 2013.
CBI announced that this raid was a part of the statewide operations to trace luxury imported cars which were bought via evasion of customs duty.This act was seen as an act of vendetta by the UPA Government as a reminder to the other alliances of the consequences of exiting the alliance.
Mulayam was the first to comment upon the same - let CBI come and raid our residences, they will find nothing but bicycles at our residences. Mayawati was also planning to make a rousing announcement but one glance at her purse house and her resiidence's backyard - full of mammoth elephant statues were enough reasons to exercise caution.
The entire political class was up against the Congress for this stabbing-in-the-back act. CBI was quick to hold a press conference to exhonerate itself from charges of being the Government's police agent.
When Amma Jayalalita was asked to comment, she quickly tossed the subject aside saying that this was a Central Government initiative and the State had nothing to do about it. She also passed a snide that she sympathized with Stalin as she remembered the day when her sarees and sandals were hoarded away by the CBI. Till date she is purchasing each month to replenish her collections.
In the meanwhile, P Chidambaram was feeling the heat of this raid. He had won his election seat via DMK's help. His appeals went unheard at the top echelons of the party.
Rajinikant was also requested to intervene but he was unavailable as the Plutonites and the Martians had gone to war over a carbon meteor which they believed would turn into a diamond after some years. Rajini was arranging a ceasefire.
DMK Supremo Karunanidhi; realizing that he was running short of options- picked up the phone and called up the High Command in Delhi. He spoke for about 5 minutes, heaved a big sigh of relief, put back his dark goggles and either slept off or just sat staring at nothingness.
The CBI press conference was immediately halted. The press given the news that nothing much was found at Stalin's place and that this was a routine check based on some wrong information provided to the CBI.
Soon, within minutes - the Congress Party came up categorically denying that it had anything to do with the raids but at the same time stating the caveat that even estranged allies will be cared for in times of duress and distress!!!! One stone two birds!!!!!
The entire political fraternity was agog with curiosity on what the DMK veteran had mentioned to Manmohan and Sonia that changed the entire story!!!
When Stalin himself asked the patriarch as to what was confided to Manmohan and Sonia, this is what the DMK honcho had to say," I told Sonia and Manmohanji that all the 17 imported cars that were found in your garages were all Mini Coopers specially brought from Italy's Maino Garage for the shooting of our family's next Magnum Opus - the CHEATalian Job!!!! I just told both of them that by arranging for these raids, you are giving me a platform to announce the CHEATalian vendetta being unleashed. They ordered the stopping of the raids in the next few minutes when I revealed some part of the story as to how 2 marines make a daring escape from India where they are held for imprisonment with the connivance of Government of the day".
